As with most of the other really good books I've read, this one came to me by way of Kelly. The whole book is a series of letters, but of course the characters and the plot unfold through these letters. It takes place right after World War II has ended. The main character is a hoot. She is a writer, early 30s, single, and at the beginning of the book, she is on a book promotion tour.
She randomly receives a letter from a man who had "an old book that once belonged to you...........by an author whose name in real life was Charles Lamb............I wondered if that meant he had written other things to choose from." This leads to correspondence with this man and other members of his community of Guernsey, of the Channel Islands, which are situated in the English Channel. They had formed "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" by necessity. The islands were under German occupation during the war.
As she continues to receive these letters, you see different story-lines unfolding, story lines that are actually connected to each other.
This post may not make the book sound very interesting, but believe me - it will make you laugh, it will bring tears to your eyes, and hopefully, it will do the same thing for you that it did for me - make you eternally grateful once again for the blessings that you now have.
