Nauvoo - The John Taylor Home

Remember that the city was built overlooking the Mississippi River.......(also remember that the sun didn't shine the whole time we were there.  I take that back - it came out our last afternoon as we were leaving town).  Thought I would throw these in.

John Taylor's home was one of the originals there.  He eventually became the 3rd President of the church.

This would be the children's room.  See the rocking horse?  There's a story there:

When the Saints had to leave Nauvoo, they could only carry the basic, bare necessities with them, and walk off and leave everything else.  This rocking horse belonged to little Joseph Taylor, son of John Taylor.  Of course, this was something that had to be left behind, but when his mother told him he would have to leave it, little Joseph cried and cried.  When his father saw him crying and asked him why, Joseph told him how hard it was to leave his horse (he was just a little fella).  They left Nauvoo that day in their covered wagon, crossed the frozen Mississippi River and went to sleep that night on the other side.  When he woke up the next morning, Joseph's rocking horse was there.  His father had gone back across the river during the night, got that horse and brought it back, and they found a way to get it to the Salt Lake Valley.  Now, that's the sort of thing a real man does, if you ask me.  (FYI, there's a story about this in the March issue of the Friend magazine).
